To enjoy a balloon flight, the open-air museum, an underground city, and classics such as Ihlara at a comfortable pace, at least three nights is recommended. Leave a spare night in case wind delays the balloon. Two days work for a quick look; five days suit a deeper trip.

It is not required. Organised day tours (north/south routes) are a practical alternative where public transport is limited. Rent a car if you want your own pace and side valleys.
Derinkuyu is deeper and often feels more dramatic; Kaymaklı has wider horizontal corridors. If time is short, one is enough — most visitors choose Derinkuyu. Wear comfortable shoes and a light layer for the narrow tunnels.

Regular coaches run from major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir to Nevşehir. From Nevşehir bus station, local minibuses and hotel shuttles connect to Göreme, Ürgüp, and Avanos. An overnight coach plus a morning transfer is a practical combo.
